In April 2022, according to the comprehensive evaluation by the expert group sent by the Ministry of Commerce, the project quality inspection and evaluation of the 200 wells in Rwanda was excellent, and the comprehensive management of the construction contractor was also rated as excellent. This is the first economic assistance project of China Geo-engineering Corporation to be rated as excellent in two aspects, which is a breakthrough in the management of economic assistance projects.
Since the start of construction in September 2019, the construction team has actively overcome the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, served the overall situation, and ensured both construction and pandemic response. Thanks to the hard work of project managers for over 30 months, the construction of 200 wells in 181 villages met expectations in terms of project quality, safety, progress and cost control. After the project is completed, it will solve the drinking water problem of more than 100,000 residents in Rwanda, greatly improve the drinking water quality, alleviate the plight of drinking water shortage, and achieve good social benefits and aid effects. A local villager, Balahin Yuza, exclaimed after seeing the water coming out of the well, “Due to the lack of clean drinking water, everyone suffered a lot and had to travel a long way to get water from other places. Someone drank dirty water from a nearby swamp and got water-borne diseases. The well built by China will fully meet our water demand and solve the health and sanitation problems of our village.”
In addition to drinking water wells, the project team has also deployed 20 monitoring wells across Rwanda to conduct long-term dynamic monitoring of local water quality and water level, helping the local government to fully understand the regional hydrogeological conditions and providing a scientific basis for sustainable development and utilization of groundwater.
