The Phase I of the Nseluka-Chozi highway project, undertaken by China Geo-Engineering Corporation (CGC), a second-tier subsidiary of China Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Group (CECEP), broke ground in Nseluka of Northern Province, Zambia, under the witness of Zambian President Edgar C. Lungu, some high-ranking officials from the Cabinet and thousands of local people.
As an integral part of the Link Zambia 8000 plan, the project is divided into three phases. When addressing the ground-breaking ceremony for Phase 1 of the project, President Lungu said that after the completion of the highway, the cargo transport route from Nakonde Port in eastern Zambia to western part of the country would be cut by half, thus considerably facilitating imports and exports. Moreover, the road would facilitate exports of agricultural products like corn in Northern Province, dubbed the “barn of Zambia,” and provide a convenient importing and exporting route for its neighbor, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He also recognized CGC’s engineering capacity, spoke highly of the remarkable achievements made by the company in Zambia and its enthusiasm for undertaking social responsibilities, and encouraged it to continue creating engineering masterpieces with its excellent brand image and fulfilling its social responsibilities for local communities. The president hoped that the road would become an icon of China-Zambia friendship like the Tanzania-Zambia Railway.
The Nseluka-Chozi highway is designed to run 172 kilometers in parallel with the Tanzania-Zambia Railway, with the Phase I extending for 82 kilometers. The entire project is scheduled to be completed in three years. It is estimated that the highway will inject impetus into Zambia’s foreign trade and make great contributions to the development of local agriculture and even grain production in central and southern Africa.
