At the invitation of the Development Research Center of the State Council, CECEP Chairman Liu Dashan attended the opening ceremony of 2018 China Development Forum Special Session held in Beijing from September 16-17. Liu also delivered a speech at the parallel session on the theme “Coping with Climate Change and Extreme Weather Events” and carried out in-depth discussions with Chinese and foreign guests on related topics.
Chairman Liu noted that in recent years we have witnessed increasingly frequent occurrence of extreme weather events causing serious dangers worldwide as a result of increased greenhouse gas emissions. Facing the challenges of global warming, building a sustainable, stable and effective global climate governance system has become consensus among most countries around the globe. As the second largest economy and the largest developing country in the world, China always attaches great importance to addressing climate change and calls for international cooperation in this area, earning universal acclaim from the international community.
Liu also briefed on CECEP’s work of addressing climate change, especially its efforts in giving priority to energy efficiency, promoting energy consumption revolution, developing clean energy, reducing fossil fuel consumption, increasing solid waste treatment, cutting methane emissions, promoting resource recycling, continuing research in low-carbon energy technologies and providing comprehensive ecological solutions as well as its achievements in the construction of Xiongan New Area, environmental governance of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, construction of Hainan National Ecological Experimental Zone and implementation of the national strategy of “Greater Protection of the Yangtze River”.
With the theme of “A New Chapter for China’s Reform and Opening-up,” the special session was intended to summarize the achievements of China’s reform and opening-up since the 18th CPC National Congress, illustrate new policies and measures for further opening-up to the international community, and express China’s wish for allowing its reform and opening-up to benefit businesses and people in other countries through enhanced international cooperation.
