On April 28, the Pakistan China Trade and Investment Forum & Pakistani Prime Minister Luncheon was held in Beijing, attended by Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, Zhang Chunxian, vice chairman of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, and Sha Zukang, former UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs and president of the China-Pakistan Friendship Association. Zheng Zhaohui, chief economist of CECEP and chairman of China National Environmental Protection Group (CNEP), was invited to spoke at the forum.
Prior to the forum, Chief Economist Zheng briefed President Sha on CECEP’s operations in Pakistan. Sha highly recognized CECEP’s endeavors in practicing green development concepts and contributing to the construction of Green Silk Road.
Sha also introduced the operations of CECEP and CNEP in Pakistan to Omar Ayub Khan, Minister for Power of Pakistan. Zheng then joined them in discussing collaboration in launching a waste incineration power generation project in Pakistan. According to Zheng, the project is expected to solve the “garbage siege” problem, ease power supply shortage in urban areas and further improve the business climate of Pakistan. Minister Omar Ayub highly recognized the environmental and social benefits of the project and affirmed his support for CNEP to help improve the urban solid waste management level of Pakistan.
During the forum, Zheng also exchanged views with Malik Amin Aslam Khan, vice president of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Advisor to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, on details concerning the waste incineration power generation project. Malik also introduced the situation of municipal waste management and primary project plans in major cities of Pakistan, and enthusiastically invited CNEP to participate in construction of solid waste disposal facilities in his country.
